Russia and the United States are in talks on potential joint projects in the data-center sector, according to Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and a presidential special representative. Dmitriev said the parties have compiled a project list that could include the use of Russian nuclear power plants.

Highlights
  • Russia and the United States are reported to be discussing joint data-center projects.
  • A project list has been formed, according to Kirill Dmitriev.
  • Use of Russian nuclear power plants was presented as a potential option, not an approved project decision.
  • No sites, capacity figures, CAPEX, counterparties or project timelines have been disclosed.
  • The discussions do not confirm a signed agreement, construction start or commissioned data-center capacity.

Kirill Dmitriev said at the Russian Energy Week forum that Russia and the United States are discussing joint projects, including in the data-center sector. He said the parties had developed a “clear list” of projects and that these could potentially involve Russian nuclear power plants.

No individual data-center project, site, operator, owner, counterparty or technical configuration has been identified. The statement did not disclose planned capacity, power-supply arrangements, investment requirements, development timetable or implementation stage.

For data-center and energy-infrastructure markets, the talks could indicate interest in models that pair data-center load with nuclear generation, if negotiations progress into formal agreements and executable projects. At present, however, the information does not establish that any facility is planned, under construction or operational, nor that a transaction or binding agreement has been concluded.

Dmitriev said new joint initiatives would be announced in the near term, but no specific announcement date was provided.

Why It Matters

The discussions point to a potential link between data-center development, large-scale low-carbon generation and international investment cooperation. However, the initiative remains at a negotiation stage, with no disclosed agreements, sites, capacities, financing or delivery commitments.
