Sarawak authorities expect part of a global technology investor’s US$50 billion investment plan to be deployed in the state, including planned AI and data-center-related infrastructure. Tanjung Embang, near Kuching, has been identified as a potential location, although neither the investor nor the Sarawak allocation has been disclosed.

Highlights
  • Sarawak expects to receive an undisclosed portion of a global technology investor’s US$50 billion overall investment plan.
  • Planned investment areas include AI- and data-center-related facilities.
  • Tanjung Embang near Kuching is a potential, rather than confirmed, location.
  • No investor identity, Sarawak-specific CAPEX, MW capacity, timetable or power-infrastructure details have been released.
  • The announcement signals potential demand but does not confirm construction or operational capacity.

On 26 October, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari said that a portion of a global technology company’s planned US$50 billion investment programme is expected to be implemented in the state. The planned investments include facilities related to AI and data centers.

The US$50 billion figure applies to the investor’s overall programme, not to a confirmed Sarawak commitment. Authorities have not disclosed the investor’s identity or the share of the programme expected to be allocated to the state. The plan was also cited at approximately MYR204.3 billion in total, again referring to the overall investment programme rather than a Sarawak-specific amount.

Tanjung Embang, near Kuching, is being considered as a potential site. Authorities are advancing the area as a low-carbon technology hub incorporating AI infrastructure. Separately, a new Kuching international airport and associated aviation infrastructure are planned for the area.

For data-center and power-infrastructure markets, the development could position Sarawak for material AI-oriented data-center investment alongside other Malaysian investment destinations if the stated intention translates into defined commitments. However, no data-center capacity in MW, IT or energy-infrastructure specifications, construction schedule, site-level CAPEX, permitting status or grid-supply arrangements have been disclosed.

The announcement should therefore be treated as an early investment signal, not as evidence that construction has begun or that data-center capacity has been commissioned.

Why It Matters

The announcement points to the potential emergence of a sizeable AI and data-center infrastructure cluster in East Malaysia. It remains an indication of investment intent rather than confirmation of construction, capacity deployment or committed capital expenditure in Sarawak.
